A letter from Dr. Jason McCloskey

Setting the Bar in Exercise and Nutrition Programming.

Physical activity is a canonical preeminent characteristic of humankind, remaining deeply embedded in the appropriate health and functioning of every single organ system within us. Unfortunately, the normalization of a sedentary lifestyle in today’s world has led to a culture-wide assumption that exercise is merely an adjunct tool used primarily for athletics, fitness, or aesthetically-centered goals, leaving an alarmingly low (12%) population of Americans considered metabolically healthy. Physical activity remains a fundamental component of obtaining and maintaining optimal health for everyone, and a “modus vivendi” (way of life) is ingrained deep into our DNA, regardless of where we fit on the sickness-wellness-fitness spectrum. The lack of regular movement has been statistically compared with smoking cigarettes and as equally detrimental to health across multiple studies, with sedentary lifestyles causing a 16% increased risk of all-cause mortality and a 34% increased risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease. It is well known that a lack of physical activity leads to loss of health and functionality, affecting every organ system and becomes a major etiological factor of many if not all, preventable diseases affecting our healthcare system in the United States.

Whether your health-related goals revolve around sickness, wellness, or fitness, physical activity remains one of the most powerful stimuli we have to improve and maintain optimal health and functionality across our lifespan, and a significant emphasis on exercise promotion should be imperative to not only solve current conditions but also serve to prevent multiple diseases from occurring in the first place. Finally, in populations with most chronic diseases where mitochondrial dysfunction is involved, an individualized exercise prescription should be crucial for the “metabolic rehabilitation” of many patients in parallel to their other therapies. From lessons learned from elite athletes (the perfect human machines), it is possible to translate and apply multiple concepts to the betterment of populations with chronic diseases.

Our professional services, including in-person training and online programming, help people of all ages and functionality exercise with confidence by utilizing safe and effective strategies to educate and empower them throughout their entire care plan to increase the quality and quantity of their movement for their most urgent goals and the rest of their lives.

Exercise isn’t just about looking healthy, or even feeling healthy. Exercise is about whole body health.

Looking Forward,
